CHAPTER EIGHT

“So, you’re telling me that Buzz is a rich, handsome, society guy?” Polly’s mouth fell open, and she stared at Macy.

“Yep, it’s all online. It took some digging, but after I heard his real name from that Jen woman who came in, I found it.” Macy nodded.

“That’s crazy. Who would pretend to be poor and take a job as a janitor?” Essence asked, eyes narrowed. “If he did that, it’s gotta be because he’s hiding out. Like, he may be a serial killer or something.” She shuddered.

“Let’s not jump to conclusions,” Polly said, putting up her hands. “I’m sure there must be a reasonable explanation.”

“Yeah, sure. It’s perfectly reasonable for a rich guy to dress like a hobo and volunteer to clean up dog kennels.” Essence gave her a look.

“Well, if he thought that it was our business, he’d have told us,” Polly glared right back.

“Cuz that’s something people would advertise to the world,” Essence muttered, turning her gaze back to the computer.

Polly rolled her eyes and changed the subject.

“So, we need to firm up our plans for the fundraising event.”

“Yes, we do,” Macy agreed. “I think that to get the most out of our fundraiser, we really need to go upscale. Like, glitz it up and invite people who can afford to write big checks.”

“Do we really think that rich people care enough about dogs to come to something like that? I mean, we don’t have much of a budget for hosting a gala event,” Polly said, making a face.

“I’ve seen shows where wealthy people adopt shelter animals and give them their own room and wardrobe, so yeah, this should work,” Macy replied. “It’ll cost a bit more to set it up, but the higher donations should more than cover it and create a healthy profit for the shelter too.”

“Maybe you can ask our rich maintenance man, Buzz, to invite his fancy friends.” Essence snickered.

Polly raised an eyebrow but didn’t dignify her remark with a response.

“I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing to capitalize on capitalists,” Sync said quietly, wiping his hands on a towel after coming in from the kennels.

“Huh?” Polly stared at him.

“I think he means since those people have the money, they’re exactly the ones that we should ask to donate,” Macy interpreted. “Is that about right?” she asked Sync.

“Yeah, I mean, there’s a bit more nuance, but that’s pretty much it.” He nodded.

“We don’t have time for nuance,” Polly said. “Okay, since you guys all seem to think that upscale is the way to go, let’s do it, but if it flops, we’ll be out a ton of money.”

“It won’t flop,” Macy replied. “We won’t let it.”

“I can make some specialized doggie clothes to sell too,” Sync volunteered.

Macy, Polly, and Essence all turned to stare at him, speechless.

“Unless you don’t think that’s a good idea…” He shifted from one foot to the other.

“You’re awesome,” Polly said, with a wide grin.

“That’s perfect, Sync, thank you!” Macy chimed in.

“Doggie clothes…” Essence shook her head and went back to her spreadsheet.
